Democrat Representative Eric Swalwell of California spoke in no uncertain terms when he addressed the House of Representatives regarding the ongoing Impeachment Inquiry into former President Trump’s involvement in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol earlier this year. He declared that the inquiry is a continuation of the insurrection, as House Republicans have taken the approach to help the former president escape accountability for the violent attack on the Capitol.
Furthermore, Swalwell stated that the House Republicans’ approach is a baseless, morally bankrupt, and very dangerous point of view as they continue to ignore their duty to safeguard the Constitution. He pointed out that the insurrection which occurred at the Capitol had as its goal to overturn the election, to overthrow the government, to set aside the will of the people, and that these attempted actions were all treasonous and must be held accountable.
In addition, Swalwell highlighted several GOP lawmakers that have openly suggested that it is better to defend the actions of the mob that stormed the Capitol. He strongly condemned this stance and lamented that by standing with Trump, they are refusing to stand with our democracy and our Constitution. He concluded with a resounding call to action, urging his House colleagues to put country over party and vote to convict Donald Trump.
As the Impeachment Inquiry continues, it is clear that Rep. Swalwell is not alone in his opinion that Trump’s role in fomenting the insurrection requires accountability. By making a bold statement of support for the proceedings, he is setting an example for other Democratic and Republican party members to follow in putting country before party.
