Attorney General Merrick Garland has expressed hope that Hamas will release more American hostages in the days to come. Following the exchange of three American citizens held by Hamas for the release of two Palestinians convicted of terrorism in the United States, Garland stated that he was “deeply grateful” to the Israeli government for securing the release of the three Americans.
Garland went on to state that while the exchange of prisoners is a necessary part of any peace process it should not be a substitute for progress in the negotiations over a two-state solution to the conflict in the Middle East. He noted that Hamas’ ongoing actions, such as the seizure of American hostages, represent a challenge that must be addressed by both the Palestinian and Israeli sides.
At the same time, Garland stressed that the safety and security of American citizens remains his paramount concern and the focus of his actions as Attorney General. He noted that his office is engaged in ongoing diplomatic discussions to ensure that no American is left behind and that Hamas is held accountable for their actions.
In addition to urging Hamas to release more American hostages, Garland emphasized the importance of preventing future hostage-takings in the region and of finding a just and peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He indicated that his office was actively pursuing a robust diplomatic effort to bring all parties, including regional stakeholders, together in an effort to reach a lasting peace.
Garland’s comments reflect the urgency of the situation and embody the hope that a dialogue between both sides will soon bear fruit. In the meantime, Garland is calling on Hamas to release any remaining hostages and to cease the use of violence against those seeking a peaceable resolution to the conflict.
