At least 80 people have been killed and hundreds more injured in a drone attack on a military college in Syria, according to reports. The attack occurred on Thursday, August 6th, 2020 at the Homs Military College in the city of Hama, in western Syria.
The unknown attacker used drones equipped with explosives to target the college, causing destruction in multiple buildings at the campus. The death toll is expected to rise as more details are revealed, with reports from some witnesses suggesting at least 120 casualties.
The attack comes after tensions between the Syrian government and rebels have been heightened for some time. Although the exact motives and perpetrators of this attack remain unclear, there is speculation that one of the rebel factions may have been responsible, possibly in retaliation for military operations by the Syrian government against rebel areas in the region.
Regardless of who was behind this attack, it is certain that the people of Syria have been put at great risk by the escalating violence in the country.
This latest incident follows further rising violence in the region, as well as increased presence of foreign military actors, most notably those of the US, Iran, and Russia. As a result of this, the chances of further escalation in the conflict remain high.
As the situation in Syria continues to be unpredictable, it is imperative that all sides exercise restraint and work towards an amicable end to the conflict. Ultimately, the only way to end the violence is to find a political solution, one which takes into account the interests of all parties involved. Until such a solution is found, the people of Syria must continue to hope for peace.
